The article focuses on issues arising from the lynching of African American laborer Sam Hose who was accused of murdering white farmer Alfred Cranford and raping his wife in front of her husband's corpse in Georgia in 1899. Georgia Congressman James M. Riggs praised the actions of the mob. Methodist preacher Sam Jones has launched a debate on the origin, impact and ethical consequences of the lynching of Hose. Jones viewed African Americans as the misfits of creation, ordained by God to serve whites and to suffer the correction of white discipline.
