The article discusses the need for pathologists in Great Britain to perform autopsies after cardiac surgery. Autopsies reveal clinically relevant information in a significant number of cases and remain essential for quality assessment in perioperative treatment. The most common post mortem findings are acute pericarditis, pericardial or pleural hemorrhage, bypass graft thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
