B Learning Objectives: b Receptor interacting kinase-3 (RIP3) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) participate in cell death pathways that induce inflammation via release of damage associated molecular patterns. mtDNA signals through Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) and may propagate organ dysfunction after trauma. We hypothesized that plasma mtDNA and RIP3 are associated with ARDS and mortality in trauma patients, and that the association is strongest in carriers of a gain-of-function TLR9 polymorphism (rs5743836).
