Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the pathological accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau. Microglia and astrocytes respond to the abnormal presence of tau protein with induced transposable element (TE) transcription.
