This discussion highlights the importance of understanding the sexual and reproductive health needs of the adolescent with cardiac disease. There are published guidelines and reports discussed in this review that provide the essential information on how to care for this special population. Like their peers, they experience physical changes and psychosocial challenges that may result in poor health outcomes, such as unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Review of the current United States Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use released in 2016 is included with emphasis on women with cardiac disease and contraception.
