Unifying cluster-based structure models of decagonal Al-Co-Ni, Al-Co-Cu and Al-Fe-Ni.

The article presents a study which examines the geometric building principles of aluminum (Al)-based decagonal quasicrystals (QCs) and approximants. A cluster-based modeling technique was used in the structural investigation covering a wide range of decagonal phases with two- or four-layer periodicity. Findings of the study show that a fundamental unit cluster allows a systematic description of all structurally known two- and four-layer Al-based decagonal QCs including approximants.
