This article examines the history of African-American Senators. There have only been five, two during Reconstruction and three since the civil rights era. Hiram Rhoads Revels of Mississippi was the first, elected in 1870, but only served one year. Blanche Bruce was a former slave and Ed Brooke was the first to be directly elected by the people. Carol Moseley Braun and Barack Obama are the other two.
