Pathology has been viewed as the gold standard for the diagnosis of dementia. Critical appraisal of the literature suggests that the criteria for pathological diagnosis of Alzheimerߣs disease vary widely, and that the relative frequency of the various aetiological causes of the dementia syndrome cannot yet be firmly established.
