The article presents a study which aims to identify the molecular basis of the fan allele PI 123440 and the creation of molecular markers to assay for the gene of GmFAD3. Sequence analysis of the GmFAD3A from Soyola revealed no sequence polymorphisms that would change the sequence of amino acid of the enzyme. The study reveals that a decrease in the steady-state levels of messenger RNA (mRNA) of the GmFAD3A results to a decrease in 18:3 synthesis in the growing seed in plants with fan allele.
