In recent years the focus of flood risk management in Slovakia was at the risk of fluvial flooding while groundwater flood risk mapping is experiencing its inception. Recently, in Europe there has been a recognition of this risk from the frequent occurrence of floods caused by the increasing groundwater level. The EU Floods Directive takes into consideration also the groundwater flooding and therefore it is necessary to assess this risk. The present paper deals with the identification of areas potentially at risk from increased levels of groundwater in Slovak Republic and is a part of a pilot project assessing the risk of groundwater flooding. The data used for mapping were the digital elevation model and the maximum measured levels of groundwater which occurred mainly in the years 1965, 1974, 1999 and 2010. After the construction of the map of areas potentially at risk from groundwater, areas with water above the ground surface and also those with groundwater at a depth less than 0.8 m below ground level (which is the average freeze depth in Slovakia so the depth in which foundations of all buildings without basements are) were identified.
