영문초록 : Many statues of Admiral Yi Sun-sin have been set up throughout the country in memory of his great loyalty, but it is argued that most of them were made in disregard of his real image. In other words, those statues failed to reflect Admiral Yi's real figure and personality since their memorial and symbolic features were not based on reliable historical investigation of him. This study aims to make a historical investigation of Admiral Yi's image in terms of formative arts putting emphasis on three aspects: 1) Admiral Yi's constitutional and facial features, 2) Admiral Yi's personal impression, and 3) Symbolic features of Admiral Yi's statue. For this historical investigation this writer consulted various references such as Admiral Yi's Nanjung Ilgi(War Diary) and Imjin Sangcho(War Draft), Jingbirok written by Admiral Yi's friend, Yoo Seong-yong, and A Complete Book of Admiral Yi compiled in 1796, etc. These references, however, did not give concrete information on the above-mentioned aspects. The fact is that this writer had to infer related information from those books. Main results of this study can be summed up as follows 1. Admiral Yi's constitutional and facial features 1) Constitution It is true that Admiral Yi had a strong constitution, but his weight was rather light compared with his great stature, thus making him look like a tall and slender man. 2) Face Admiral Yi probably had a rather long face whose cheekbones and upper jawbone were not prominent as the Mongolian's were. His face was not fat, and had heavy but neat-looking mustache and beard. Thus, Admiral Yi's statue is required to remind us a dignified man of graceful appearance. 2. Admiral Yi's personal impression Admiral Yi was a man of wisdom, bravery and virtue in his personality, but in his appearance he looked like rather an admiral of wisdom. This impression is also required to be reflected in the making of his statue. 3. Symbolic features of Admiral Yi's statue Admiral Yi had a strong national identity and lived never forgetting a moment how to protect the country and people from foreign invasion. During the Japanese Invasion, moreover, he was so involved in this spirit of patriotism that he could never be liberated from the worries for the country and the wrath against the enemy. This feature should also be symbolized in the moulding of his statue.
