520 b영문초록 : The purpose of this study is to determine what was the source of choreographical experiments of postmodern dance actively taken place in the early 1960s of the United States and then to clarify the real value of the experiments. The artistic reactive movement developed mainly in the region of Europe since World War I became extensively introduced to the United States of the 1950s. The movement refused any combination with modernism, restored relics of the European avant-garde arts and tried to destroy existing orders. As a result, new aspects of innovation were prevailed over all the artistic genres. In the field of dance, accordingly, postmodern dance was emerged and developed as part of escaping or transmitting modern dance. Under this circumstance, postmodern dance in the United States of the late 1960s pursued anti-modernity for which structural patterns of modern dance and at the same time any traditional formulas in the movement construction and expression of dance were all refused. Choreographical experiments as below were carried out the Judson Group which had been developed through workshops provided by Robert Dunn who are still evaluated as representative activist of postmodern dance in the field of modern dance of the United States. First, the workshops as deemed as a precedence to the earlier postmodern dance allowed anyone to perform dance and any ways of dancing to be applied. They were recognized as having values such as freedom and openness from the view of experiment. Second, choreographical experiments by the group made sure the independence of each of the different genres despite of their collaboration with them. This suggests that the experiments intended to accept artistic fields other than dance under the initiative perception and essential independence of dance. Third, it seems purported experimentally that random techniques based on choreographical contingencies were applied to promote more free dance movement rather than conventional one. Fourth, the experiments were designed with imprompt performance and voluntary, common actions to be free from fixed dancing patterns, not sticking to them, and further reach the advancement and specialization of the performance genre ensuring the removal of non-communicative situations. Fifth, the experiments seem valuable in that they tried to avoid the traditional concept of dance performance stage, mysticism about dancers and other fixed ideas through utilizing open spaces of the performance. Sixth, the experimental works by the Judson Group resisted academism and eliticism in the field of dance. They also introduced the common actions and motions of daily life by allowing performances by ordinary dancers who had never learned traditional ways of dancing. In conclusion, postmodern dance has been developed with its own quality based on the trends of commonness and populism. However, further efforts should be made to better understand and accept a true artistic world of postmodern dance.
