Frame is the most basic visual boundary and also the most important manifestation of an image. It can attach a new connotation to things and provide a new and focused visual space to the audience. The application of frame deformation is considered as one of the more common methods in animation but is a topic that is easily overlooked in current research. However, the application of frame has often presented rich forms. The visual language of frame is able to convey information on an intuitive basis through visual impressions, and meanwhile, the composition can successfully integrate the background and characters into a created space, thus facilitating the transmission of the hidden content in animation by empowering a certain rhetorical function. This research reviews the literature of frame and some animation works related to deformation and analyzes the actual creation process of Shadow, an animated work created by the author to summarize the diverse application and manifestation of frame deformation. This research is divided into five parts. Part one is about the background and purpose of this research. Part two is the literature review of the animation's own performance, the elements of composition, and the theory of frame and discusses frame deformation and its expressions in composition. In the third part, the frame deformation in existing animation is analyzed and expounded, and in the fourth part, the case of Shadow is discussed to prove the point of view of this research by combining theory and practice. Eventually, this research concludes in the fifth part based on the analysis results and presents the expected effects. According to the analysis of Shadow, it is concluded that the frame deformation demonstrated by elements including body, small and large props, and light and dark contrast can reveal information intuitively and highlight the main body of an image to guide the audience's sight. Frame deformation, as a creation technique with consciousness, contains various intentions that the creator manages to express, so it can portray the personal style of a creator. It is believed that frame deformation will be used more in future animations to contribute to the innovation and advancement of animation.
