서양 오페라에서 중국 요소를 활용한 작품은 1692년에 발표된 영국 작곡가 헨리 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659〜1695)의 「The Fairy Queen」으로부터 시작되어 1707년 이탈리아 출신의 프란체스코 가스파리니(Francesco Gasparini, 1661 1727)의 「Taican, rè della Cina」, 1719년 안토니오 비발디(1678〜1741)의「The Teatro Arciducale in Mantua」등이 있다.
It has been argued that arts and life are interdependent and mutuallyreinforcing. Specifically, the progress of art depends on the developmentof free thinking and expression. The development of opera can beinvestigated from the relationship between Oriental and Western cultures.Chinese and Western cultures have influenced each other in the longprocess of social development undergoing integration and evolution inhistory. By the 20th century, Western opera was colored with modernism, combined with the symbolism of storyline and the conflict betweencharacters and society. More importantly, Western composers paid moreattention to non-European music. They looked for the diverse sources ofcreativity and inspiration to expand their own scope of composition. Asa significant social trend in Europe, there were some Western composersand playwrights who were curious about Chinese culture and musicwhen they strived to compose operas. Curiosity is very important sourcefor making differences when composing operas. Therefore, Chineseelements such as Chinese folklore and traditional music played the roleof inspiration in preparing opera text. Chinese elements are what have been born and developed in Chinasince ancient times, which is related to national identity of China.Chinese elements consist of two parts. The first part refers to tangiblematerial and cultural elements such as China’s geography, property, architecture, and clothing, etc. The other is non-material culturalelements such as ideology, moral concepts, value system, folkphenomena, habits in daily life, religious beliefs, art, ethics and so on.Chinese elements contain gorgeous cultural connotations and values.Western opera could contact and interact with Chinese culture, andChinese elements could be integrated into Western opera despite lessdevelopment of transportation and communication. The very first use of Chinese elements in Western opera can befound in 「The Fairy Queen」, written by British composer HenryPurcell(1659∼1695) in 1692. Then, Italian composer FrancescoGasparini(1661∼1727) composed the opera 「Taican, rè della Cina」 in1707. Antonio Lucio Vivaldi(1678∼1741) composed the opera Teuzzone in1719 and premiered it in the same year at 「The Teatro Arciducale inMantua」. Since then, the usage of Chinese elements has becomeincreasingly prevalent during the creation of Western operas in Europe.Composer Giuseppe Bonno(1711∼1788), based on the playwright PietroMetastasio(1698∼1782), developed the Yuan drama "L'orphelin de laMaison de" The opera "L'Eroe Cinese" was first performed atSchönbrunn in Austria in 1752. In addition, there are many operacomposers in Europe who also wrote operas integrating Chinese elementssuch as Baldassarre Galuppi (1706∼1785), Antonio Sacchini(1730∼1786),Domenico Cimarosa(1749∼1801), Venanzio Rauzzini(1746∼1810) andGiordani Giuseppe(1793∼1798). This thesis focuses on analysis of the Chinese elements in the opera「Turandot」 which was written by Italian composer GiacomoPuccini(1858∼1924). Puccini's 「Turandot」 is the representative operawith typical Chinese elements among many Western operas. With thestudy of script and music of 「Turandot」, this thesis aims atinvestigating what enables people to have a deeper understanding ofChinese culture, including traditional Chinese music and traditionalChinese culture. 「Turandot」, completed in 1926, is the third opera based on theChinese legend "The Three Mysteries of Turandot" which is actually thelast opera in Puccini's life. In the early 20th century, the exoticism ofWestern opera played a significant role for composers. Hence, they triedto look for an inspiration for opera composition outside Europe, andPuccini is one of the representatives who accepted foreign culturalelements from other countries in music creation. It took six years for「Turandot」 to be first staged in 1926. The plot of 「Turandot」stems from the folk myth based on theChinese Yuan Dynasty. During the creation, playwrights RenatoSimoni(1875∼1952) and Giuseppe Adami(1878∼1946) expected to get ridof symbolic images and emphasize realism. For example, the playdescribes specific place names such as Beijing(Pekino), the ForbiddenCity(Violetta), the Yangtze River(Jang-Tsè) and the representativeChinese thinker Confucius(B.C. 551∼B.C. 479). Additionally, it alsopointed out Chinese traditional customs of marriage and funeral, ancientChinese feudal thought, Taoist thought etc. Furthermore, from the musicaspect of 「Turandot」, Puccini actively used the pentatonic scale anddiatonic scale of traditional Chinese melodic music in order to showChinese characteristics. Traditional melodies such as ‘Jasmine Flower’,‘Unknown songs’ and ‘The Emperor's Praise’ can be found throughoutthe opera. Although 「Turandot」 has been around for nearly a centurysince its premiere, 「Turandot」is still one of the most frequentlyperformed operas in the stage all around the world. It could not onlypromote cultural exchanges among countries around the world, but alsorespect the diversity of world cultures. This thesis aim to investigate how exchanges of Eastern andWestern cultures were promoted, how different cultural elements wereintegrated, and how national cultural elements were accepted beyond thenational boundary. This work hopes to contribute to better understandingof Western opera of the 20th century.
