Small and medium enterprises have played a pivotal role in the economic development in developing countries. Intriguingly, there is a typical lack of effective entrepreneurial management in a large fraction of small and medium enterprises. Therefore, this study aims to probe into better how entrepreneurial leadership is correlated with outcomes at the individual and team levels targeting in small and medium enterprises. To be specific, at the individual level, considering the critical role of the intent dimensions in explaining organizational behaviors, this research investigates the relationship between entrepreneurial leadership and intrapreneurial intentions of team members; at the team level, it conducts a thorough examination of how entrepreneurial leadership influences team performance through the role of team-efficacy.The increasingly flatter organizations were accompanied by the more and more critical role of the team. Efficacy beliefs at both the individual and team levels attracted the attention of a variety of scholars. Thus, based on the theory of planned behaviors and social cognitive theory, this study conceptualized how self-efficacy and team-efficacy predict individuals’ intrapreneurial intentions, as well as the way in which team-efficacy prediction influences team performance. In addition, this study examined the cross-level mediating roles of self-efficacy and team-efficacy on the relationship between entrepreneurial leadership and intrapreneurial intentions, and the mediating effect of team-efficacy on the relationship between independent variable entrepreneurial leadership and the dependent variable team performance at the team level.Furthermore, this study tested the conceptual model based on multi-level data, in which the sample was collected from 688 team members and 104 teams from 33 SMEs in China. The results demonstrated that entrepreneurial leadership could help predict team performance and an individual’s intrapreneurial intentions positively, which is consistent with what was found in previous researches. Moreover, a positive relationship was confirmed between team efficacy and team performance. In addition, as expected, it was confirmed that self-efficacy and team-efficacy were positively correlated with intrapreneurial intentions. With cross-level mediation effects, both self-efficacy and team-efficacy were demonstrated to partially mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial leadership and intrapreneurial intentions. At the team level, team-efficacy mediated the positive influence of entrepreneurial leadership on team performance. This study extended the knowledge on entrepreneurial leadership by taking into account the effect of entrepreneurial leadership on outcomes at both the team-level and individual-level in the same model, verifying the mediating effect of team-level and individual-level efficacy beliefs simultaneously. Practically, it provides theoretical guidance for managers who anticipate promoting team members’ intentions toward corporate entrepreneurship. In this sense, individuals should be specifically motivated to engage in entrepreneurial behaviors. In short, entrepreneurial leadership, a distinctive leadership style, instills subordinates to be confident in themselves and their teams and motivates them to engage in opportunities-recognition activities in the entrepreneurial process.
