This paper was conducted to identify the characteristics of Chinese design as shown in 16 designs of international events held in China between 1978 to 2020. An international event design showcases a visual representation of the host country’s culture and history to people all around the world. In this paper, we reveal the characteristics and movements of traditional Chinese paintings by considering China’s ideological trend and perception of art and investigate how they apply to international event design. The following sums up what has been discussed to achieve these objectives.Traditional Chinese paintings have changed its form and style according to trends over time. We examined traditional Chinese paintings by dividing it into imperial-court decorative paintings and literati paintings. In particular, traditional Chinese paintings merge traditional Chinese ideas and artists’ artistry to display a mood, so we divided them into two aspects: thought (internal, topic, color, and blank space) and expression (external, material, and technique). Traditional paintings express ideas through external formations, which embody the spirit, aesthetic awareness, and social concepts emphasized by the Yubuldo (the three religions: Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism). In this paper, we found that these expressions of traditional paintings are also evident in international event design. We decided this as the archetype of Chinese design and examined the archetype in detail by classifying it as spiritual (internal) and material (external) based on the spiritual. We have extracted four archetypes applied to Chinese design that are summarized as follows. The first archetype is ‘the acceptance of nature’. It is an ideology that penetrates the history of traditional Chinese thought and culture, representing the harmony between man and nature. The Chinese design concept is presented as an expression of the ideology of awe towards the universe, love for life, and conformity of nature while considering the unique symbolic meaning of natural materials. The second archetype is ‘the acceptance of tradition’. The core idea of the unity of the three religions, Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, is expressed in Chinese design as an ideology of ‘天人合一 (the unity of man and nature)’, ‘返璞歸眞 (the return to the way it used to be and restore what is true)’, ‘harmony’, and ‘以人爲本 (the consideration of man as the foremost)’. Through the use of traditional painting, Chinese design presents a Chinese design philosophy that comes from the universe’s wisdom which goes beyond life. The third archetype is ‘color.’ Firstly, the concept of ‘五行五色 (five attributes and five colors)’ is considered the design principle. In the Chinese worldview, color is an emblem and symbol to represent the upper and the lower classes. The colors used in Chinese design have strong subjective characteristics rather than objective ones. Additionally, the colors of Chinese design have been influenced by traditional colors, revealing the characteristics of ‘崇紅尙黃 (worship red and yellow)’. The harmony of bright and warm colors present grand and magnificent styles. These colors are often used to express a ‘noble’ position. It has a political motivation. Finally, there is a color that cannot be overlooked in traditional colours: ‘無色 (colorless)’. Although it is colorless, it shows more intense light than any other color. In design, it is expressed as black. The intense visual tension of ink created through the contrasts between black and white, or black and color, express the ideological harmony of Chinese people’s respect for nature and the pursuit of heaven and earth’s alignment. The fourth archetype can be presented as a technique of expression, which is summarized in four ways. First, ‘大巧若拙 (when great ingenuity appears to be stupidity)’. Chinese design emphasizes nature beauty. Chinese aesthetic philosophy embodies Chinese people’s unique aesthetic view inspired by the beauty of nature and respect for nature. Second, ‘以小见大 (to imagine the big from the small)’. This refers to the inherent transcendental thought of the Chinese aesthetic. The term ‘big’ refers to going beyond one’s limits. It is a transcendence of going beyond one’s small world towards a big world where man and nature, and man and universe align. Third, ‘气韵生动 (vivid in flavour and tone)’. It is thought that all things in heaven and earth originate from ‘chi’ and return to ‘chi’, and the universe also circulates like this as it grows and flourishes. The work expresses the vitality of life by expanding its visual space. Fourth, the contrast of blank space. The blank space displayed in traditional Chinese paintings is the ideological result of Taoism’s ‘Wu Wei (inexertion)’ and Buddhism’s ‘Gong (emptiness)’. Chinese design expresses the beauty of painting through ‘實 (the real)’ and implies the spirit’s beauty through ‘虚 (the virtual)’. Between the two, ‘the imaginary’ is considered more important. An outstanding design work shows not only the visual elements but also the philosophy and traditional ideas of the people, aesthetic awareness, formative consciousness, ideology, and cultural phenomena. Chinese international event designs express a design language that considers essential archetypes derived from Chinese people’s unique traditional ideas and traditional paintings. Within the international trend of multicultural convergence, we must sustain Chinese design’s archetypes and develop Chinese design style. As a result of this paper, we will be able to devise a systematically possible design method and theoretical framework for Chinese design development. We hope that this system can be applied to international event designs and various other fields such as advertisement design, architectural design, costume design, and garden design.
