This study aims to arrange frameworks for supporting the young adults and middle-aged single-person householders and suggest implications for establishing social welfare policies for them by examining ecological variables that affect the young adults and middle-aged single-person householders to elicit implications about the preventive intervention in newly arising social problems in circumstances where despite of the dramatic increase of single-person households and the occurrence of new problems related with various social and economical factors, the study of single-person households is focused only on the elderly living alone. For the purposes of this study, the researcher integrated data each for the households and the household members from Korea Welfare Panel Study and extracted relevant variables regarding the young adults and the middle-aged single-person households, analyzed 196 young adults aged from 20 to 44 and 304 middle-aged adults aged from 45 to 64. The main results are as follows : First, in terms of life satisfaction of the household and the level of depression, the life satisfaction of the young adults was significantly higher than that of the middle-aged, and the level of depression of the middle-aged was significantly higher than that of the young adults. Second, in case of single-person households, Individualsystem (gender, health status, household annual income), microsystem (family relation satisfaction, social relationship satisfaction) and mesosystem (career satisfaction, leisure satisfaction) turned out to be the significant factors that affect the life satisfaction. Along with all the variables mentioned above, Individualsystem (economic activity status) be the significant factor that affect the young adults single-person household, and Individualsystem (residential area) and microsystem (family relation satisfaction) turned out to be the significant factor that affect the middle-aged single-person household. Third, in case of the young adults single-person household, Individualsystem of residential area and microsystem of social relationship satisfaction appeared to significantly affect the level of depression and in case of the middle-aged single-person households, Individualsystem of health status, microsystem of family relation satisfaction and social relationship satisfaction combined, mesosystem of career satisfaction and the macrosystem of availability of social service appeared to significantly affect the level of depression. Through this, we have identified the effects of ecological factors (Individualsystem, microsystem, mesosystem and macrosystem) on life satisfaction and the level of depression of the young adults and the middle-aged single-person households. Suggestions based on the results of this study are as follows : First, society should recognize rapidly increasing single-person household as one type of family and it is urgent that relevant regulations for the single-person households be enacted so as to prevent them from being socially excluded or alienated arranging necessary support system. Second, society should provide programs suited for the characteristics of the single-person households at the early stages because if they come to an old age without their characteristics and problems ameliorated, the social burden will be aggravated. Also, support for the physical·mental health and the formation of social relationship network such as enlarging volunteering opportunities of the single-person households, propping up self-help leisure groups and inducing active participation to the formation of network is needed. Third, the middle-aged single-person households showed high level of depression and in regard to this matter, it is urgent that we come up with positive social intervention measures, not just see it as personal problems.
