Domestically and internationally, political problems of each society and alienation phenomenon of minority groups occur diversely and commonly, and nowadays, a problem of one country is being extended to the worldwide scope. The social movements of minority groups are also in an increasing trend more than ever. However, just until 20 years ago, the alienation phenomenon of minority groups mostly remained below the water surface, and unlike nowadays, it was not easy to hope for active social movements. This was also clearly the case in the performance art field. Nowadays, performances are put on stages more freely and frequently whereby a present society’s political and cultural realities are exposed and interests in oppressed minorities are aroused. Amid such social movements, this study examines the social structure, in which social identities of minority groups are formed, through by Tony Kushner, which deals with alienation phenomenon of various minority groups.Kushner discloses the social structure of minorities being oppressed due to the “hard body” backed up by Ronald Reagan administration in 1980s. Such a policy of Reagan administration ended up as conservative and dictatorial “Reaganism” rather than leading the society in a good direction. Furthermore, with respect to the past political problems dealt with in this play, similar problems can be found again in the political and cultural backgrounds under the current Trump administration. For example, the policies pursued by presidents Reagan and Trump of the Republican Party advocate “America First”, showing that the nation is not protecting the minorities. The minority group discrimination in 1980s is also still continued today in 2018, and it is sometimes showing a new aspect. As such risks are combined with the political problems of present regime, the social movements of minority groups are becoming more vigorous not just in the U.S.A. but around the world. As the boom in Broadway was brought by the director George Wolfe in 1990s amid such a chaotic social atmosphere, the political and cultural problems of present societies are becoming new issues through Marianne Elliot in 2018. With comparing George Wolfe’s and Marianne Elliot’s , this paper examines how these two performances approach the social issues, respectively. Up until now, as was performed in many countries, it created opportunities for communication between the audience and society. Therefore, by Kushner is not only remembered as a classic but can be appraised as a successful play that can arouse resonance of present society.
