The main purpose of this research was to explore the impact of donation types (i.e. money and time) on consumer happiness. I propose that the impact of donation types on consumer happiness partly depend on social connection (moderate variable) in the process of donation behavior, and then explore whether high social connection is more helpful in enhancing consumers' happiness than low social connection. Finally, I investigated whether there is a difference between the influence of donation types (money vs. time) on happiness by proposing involvement as another moderation variable. The study adopted experimental research strategy and responses were obtained by administrating questionnaires to 160 participants. The results revealed that both donation types(money and time) led to improve consumers' happiness. High social connection is more helpful to improve consumer happiness than low social connection. As expected, the impact of donation types (money vs. time) on consumer happiness was partly dependent on social connections. In high social connection context, donation of time leads to more happiness than donation of money. Because the attention to time evokes individuals’ emotional mindset through related experience and such emotional mindset contribute to enhance happiness. On the other hand, in low social connection context, donation of money leads to more happiness than time. High involvement is more helpful in improving consumer happiness than low involvement. Involvement played a moderating role in the process of donation behaviors (money vs. time) on consumer happiness. In high involvement context, donation of time led to more happiness than money. In low involvement context, donation of money can lead to more happiness than time.Taking social connection and involvement as moderator variables, it can be observed that consumers with high social connection and involvement are more effective in enhancing happiness than low social connection and low involvement consumers. Consumers can experience happiness even when they conduct socially desirable consumption behavior as an act of social responsibility.Along with these findings, we discussed the theoretical contributions of this research and provided the managerial implications for marketing managers. Further, I discussed some limitations of this study that came from exploring a new construct, and suggested future research directions to overcome those limitations and to extend the findings of this study.
