This essay analyzes the distinctive rhythm within the piano work collection: 「Catalogue d’Oiseaux, 1956-58」, that was written by Olivier Messiaen, a typical composer of modernclassical French music. The work collection 「Catalogue d’Oiseaux」 was composed by Olivier Messiaen, based on his recording of birdsongs across France. This collection contains seven volumes and thirteen pieces. Each piece is unrelated and is named after a bird that the song describes. Before carrying out any analyses, this essay investigates Messiaen’s career, the trends of his compositions of different periods, and his unique musical techniques; this is discussed in the theoretical background section of this essay. The main body of the essay analyzes the distinctive rhythm forms that appear in the thirteen pieces of 「Catalogue d’Oiseaux」. They are: Greek music rhythm, Indian music rhythm, added value rhythm, retrogradable and non-retrogradable rhythm, and augmentation, and diminution processes. Distinctive rhythms are highlighted in the musical examples in order to be grasped at first sight. Research findings and distinctions of Messiaen’s rhythm are included in the conclusion part. Compared with traditional music, this essay reveals Messiaen’s distinction in techniques and forms of rhythm. Instead of sticking to traditional composition methods, Messiaen uses various modern composition techniques which he claims are his own special techniques; these include his charm of impossibility, rhythm, melody, harmony, and musical modes. In this way, he creates unimaginable charm in rhythm, melody, harmony, and musical modes. Masterpieces composed by exploiting the diverse transformation of rhythm and his special techniques are amazing. In this study, we realize a clearer and more academic perspective looking into 「Catalogue d’Oiseaux」, which thus gives an explicit understanding of the Massiaen’s composition techniques and his distinctive rhythm.
