The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the sustainable development indicators and city sustainability cases of various countries, creating a new sustainable development indicatorsthat corresponds to the characteristics of large cities in China based on results of the analysis. To achieve this, I first selected cities with populations over 5 million people, such as Shanghai and Beijing in China, as well as Seoul as the major cities, conducting comparative analysis on them which focused on social, environmental and economic indexes. Results of the comparative analysis done on the social, environmental and economic indexes for the three cities are summarized as follows.Firstly, while comparing the GDP per capita of the three cities, the GDP of Seoul is higher than that of Shanghai and Beijing in China. Secondly, energy consumption per person is of similar levels in all three cities, although energy consumption is still higher in the large cities of China as compared to that in Seoul. Thirdly, with respect to population growth rate and the aging rate of population, the populations of all three countries are shrinking with time while the aging populations are expanding. Fourthly, greenhouse gas emission per person in all cities; i.e. Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai, is on the decline as compared to the past. Fifthly, the fine particulate air pollution is very much worse in Shanghai and Beijing of China as compared to that in Seoul. Lastly, water consumption per person is at more desirable levels in Shanghai and Beijing than in Seoul. Despite continuous commitments made by large cities in China for sustainable development, research and evaluation related to sustainable development in large cities are still in inadequate. Therefore, I hope this study will jump-start further researches and evaluations on sustainability of large cities in China in the future. In addition, using the newly created sustainability indicators of large cities in China based on this study, I aim to uncover the elements required for sustainable development in large cities of China and propose future directions for it.
