In the context of structural performance on LNG hold, the mechanical characteristics of insulation material are considered a critical design factor under cryogenic temperature. This paper present the thermal elasto-plastic behavior of the reinforced polyurethane foam (RPUF) adapted for the insulation material of membrane type LNG carrier via both experiments and numerical simulations realizing the cryogenic condition. The experiments are carried out to investigate the characteristics for thermal transfer and thermal elasto-plastic deformation on the actual RPUF specimen. the heat transfer simulations basde on finite element method (FEM) include forced convection analysis. The results of heat transfer analyses are compared experimental results. Reasonable cryogenic conditions on RPUF are reviewed form analysis and experimental results. This article researched the compressive strength characteristics of RPUF by nonlinear structural analysis. The material properties values that required by nonlinear structural analysis got through the compressed material experiment. After the nonlinear structural analysis on the compressive strength by the material properties values obtained from experiment, verified the correctness of analytical method by compared with the experimental results. As the change of density of RPUF resulting in the changes of compressive strength characteristics through nonlinear structural analysis and compressed material experiment. Keywords : LNG carrier, Thermal elasto-plastic behavior, Reinforced Polyurethane Foam(RPUF), Finite Element Method(FEM), Forced convection, Compressive strength, Nonlinear structural analysis.
