Since their discovery in 1991, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have become a material centralto the field of nanotechnology. Owing to their splendid physical, structural and electricalproperties, they have the potential to impact a wide range of applications, includingnanoelectronic devices, nanoscale sensors, solar cells, battery electrode, and field emitters, and fiber and coating composites, among others. Over the past few decades, CNTs have beenattracting attentions of researchers all over the world and research work on them has increasedexponentially.Although not all the reported applications will require large-scale CNT usage, there areapplications where large volumes of CNTs will be required, such as in fiber-composites, films, coatings, and additives. As a result, the necessity exists for large-scale and inexpensiveapproaches to produce CNTs. Various techniques for CNT growth which have potential formass production have been developed, among which chemical vapor deposition (CVD)method has been proven to be more effective for scale-up mass production of CNTs with lowcost. Given that, catalytic CVD (CCVD) method has been implemented throughout all ourstudy.Because of the nano-porous structure of zeolite (NaX) crystals, we attempted to applythem as the support to prevent metal-containing catalyst particles from coalescing at theelevated temperatures for effective synthesis of thin CNTs. Through the ion-exchangebetween metal and sodium cations in the aqueous environment, metal-containing NPs couldbe formed and supported in the zeolitic structure after calcination. CNTs and othermorphological carbon products were synthesized in the bulk state with the assistance of thesemetal (Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu)-supported zeolite catalysts. Besides, for Fe- and Co-supportedzeolite NaX, the impact of metal contents and reaction time on the yield and quality of thesynthesized CNTs were investigated with the characterization of FESEM, TEM and Ramanspectroscopy.Although the yield and quality of the CNTs synthesized with the processes wereXVundeniable high, they were randomly formed without uniform directions. However, a reliablepreparation method to control the dimension, location, and structure of CNTs is highlydesirable for most of their applications as well as for fundamental studies. Therefore, controlled synthesis of VACNTs is expected.Considering a number of research works on VACNTs has been reported to increase theirgrowth efficiency and modify the catalyst-support interaction, well-aligned CNTs on varioussubstrates have been synthesized, which is essential for nanodevice integration. In order toprevent the coalescing of catalyst NPs on the surface of the substrate, leading to a reasonablearea density for the formation of VACNTs, perfectly-shaped silicalite-1 crystals wereassembled with a uniform orientation perpendicular to the Si substrate surface as theintermediate buffer layer between catalyst NPs and the substrate. We chose two methods todeposit catalyst NPs, that is, radio-frequency sputtering for Fe2O3 deposition and simpledrop-drying for Fe3O4 NP deposition. After an ultimate investigation, we realized the control of VACNT diameters to someextent through the size control of synthesized Fe3O4 NPs. A relevant relationship betweenthem was plotted to show variation tendency. In addition, VACNTs catalyzed by Fe3O4NP-supported silicalite-1 crystal-assembled Si substrate showed a clear vertical array feature. However, there still exists the space for further modification to obtain much better results.
