The French New Wave, which is one of the three most significant aesthetic movements in the movie history, refers to an upsurge of unknown youth competed to direct their own maiden works in the French moviedom from 1958 to 1962. They criticized the traditional stark "good-quality movies". On the contrary, they insisted that directors should produce movies of their own personal style, and movies should be reshaped to be personalized art. Depending on brand new movie concepts, prominent personal style and outstanding aesthetic skills, numerous movies won awards one after another in various film festivals, like les Cousins by Claude Chabrol, Les Quatre Cents Coups by Francois Truffaut, and A Bout de Souffle (Breathless) by Jean-Luc Godard. The French New Wave astonished the global moviedom, and aroused new movie movements in many other countries, such as the United States of America, Britain, the former West Germany, Japan and so on. The French New Wave also had a profound influence on the Chinese films, especially in the contemporary films of China mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. A clear shadow of the French New Wave can be seen in the films in these areas. In order to further summarize the influence of the French New Wave on chinese films, the work gives a detailed analysis of relationship between the French New Wave and Chinese movies. This study aims to examine the influence of the French New Wave on Chinese cinemas from a broad perspective, expects to figure out the reasons of the flourishing, decay and resurging of the Chinese movies in the recent years, seeks some rules underlying the development of Chinese movies, and explores the prospect of Chinese movies in the future. The thesis comprises seven chapters. The first chapter describes the study background, purpose and main research methods. The second chapter introduces the definition, development and significance of the French New Wave in detail.
