Passion is the essential nature of excellence overcoming personal limitations and poor environment, and is believed to be a positive psychological factor that enriches and upgrades individuals’ life. This study purposed to explore the factors of dance passion internalized by dancers and to examine the conceptual structure inherent in these factors. For these purposes, we sampled dancers in various majors, surveyed the conceptual attributes of dance passion using an open-ended questionnaire, and confirmed the conceptual structure of dance passion through a series of statistical validity analyses including exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. What is more, through multivariate analysis and discriminant analysis, we determined whether the concepts of dance passion found in the review of previous studies can explain dancers’ actual behaviors, focusing on those majoring in Korean dances. According to the results of this study, 11 sub-factors of dance passion perceived by dance majors were found through the survey using an open-ended questionnaire, which are personal effort in practice, routinization of dance, attachment to dance-related properties, desire for dance learning, dance socialization, viewing of dance performance, desire for performance, dance practice attitude, desire for dance knowledge, experience in dance emotion, and self-management. This indicates that dancers’ passion is a behavioral concept comprehending their cognitive, emotional and motivational characteristics related to dance. Second, when the conceptual structure of dance passion was examined statistically, dance passion was found to be a multi-dimensional concept consisting of 5 factors, which are learning desire, self investment, dance identity, physical management, and pursuit of knowledge. Third, in the result of discriminant analysis on difference in dance passion according to age and how much dance passion can predict various dance behaviors in Korean dancers, learning desire was higher in dancers in their 30s than in those in their 20s. With regard to self investment, the frequency of viewing dance performance was higher in those in their 10s than in those in their 20s and 30s. What is more, among the factors of dance passion, learning desire was found to discriminate dancers’ weekly practice hours and daily dance learning hours. In addition, weekly dance information search was discriminated by pursuit of knowledge, and monthly viewing of dance performance was by self investment. These results were discussed in connection with future research on dance passion and related research topics.
