Fault location is an issue of a great importance for power system reliability operation as the possibility to accurately determine a fault allows for faster system restoration. However, fault location requires many different and case dependent issues to be simultaneously taken into consideration. i.e. when a fault occurs in double-circuit transmission lines, the mutual impedances between the two circuits inevitably affect the accuracy of the fault location. Unlike the transmission lines, distribution feeders usually have more inherent difficulties such as non-homogeneity of lines, mixed use of single and three-phase circuits and loads, many branches, many load taps, load uncertainty, etc. Also nowadays more and more power cables have been widely used, but the fault location for underground cables is even more complicated since it is much hidden from view than overhead circuits and it has significant capacitance that can maintain charge for days, which brings in lots of difficulties for locating a fault point. This dissertation addresses three new fault location algorithms for underground cables and overhead lines in power system based on direct circuit analysis with taking account of, most frequently occurring - single line-to-ground faults and line-to-line faults, because the analysis of fault location for a single line-to-ground fault (SLG) can be also applied for a line-to-line to ground fault and a balanced three-phase fault, but the analysis of fault location for a line-to-line fault is different from those fault types. The first fault location algorithm is proposed for double-circuit transmission lines in case of a SLG fault. The mutual coupling between the two circuits is taken into account, and the proposed algorithm requires voltage and current data at the local end as well as zero-sequence current at the adjacent healthy line. And it has been compared with three conventional algorithms to demonstrate its effectiveness. The second proposed algorithm is fault location for underground power cables in distribution system in case of a SLG fault. The proposed algorithm is using distributed parameter circuit and formulated based on sequence networks (zero, positive, and negative). The boundary conditions are achieved through comprehensive analysis on both sequence network and phase network. Finally, a voltage equation holding at the fault point is obtained with respect to the variable of fault distance and solved through Newton-Raphson iteration method. The third algorithm is fault location on overhead lines in distribution system in case of a line-to-line fault as an extension of the previous work for a single line-to-ground fault location. Note that this algorithm is more effective for unbalanced distribution system with considering those inherent and unique characteristics of distribution network. With regard to the latter mentioned two proposed algorithms in distribution system, their robustness to load variation has been tested due to a load compensation method.Although the three algorithms are addressed for different systems with different cases, they still have lots of things in common. All of them are based on the circuit analysis of the faulted system and belong to one-end method with requiring the voltage and current data measured from one side of the line only. They are dedicated to achieving a final equation with respect to the variable of fault distance. Furthermore, matrix techniques and symmetrical component transformation also form the basis of the analysis. In practice, the three proposed algorithms can be implemented as powerful on-line tools to locate a fault point with digital archive measurements.
