When a fault occurs in a transmission line, an accurate fault locator makes fast restoration and power system availability possible. A fault location method based on impedance calculation shows highly accurate result if the data from both end are used but, it is required to use synchronized data acquisition system.Current distribution factors are used for estimating remote terminal fault currents in case of a method which uses data from only the local terminal of the line. Current distribution factors consist of known variables and unknown variables. Known variables are line impedance and the source impedances and unknown variables are the fault point and fault resistance. Therefore, the accuracy of estimated remote terminal fault current depends on the source impedance accuracy of current distribution factor.According to power system operation condition, equivalent sources are varied continuously. That means equivalent source impedance variation if equivalent voltage is constant. A fault location method which uses fixed source impedance causes errors when source impedances are varied. A fault location algorithm using estimated local source impedance after a fault is proposed in this paper. There are a lot of generators in power system, the transient response of generator are changed as time passed during subtransient, transient, steady state period. When a fault occurs near generation bus, dynamic characteristic appears in current signal of generator. Generally, current signal of generator decays exponentially in transient state. The phasor as a steady-state concept, i.e., a complex number containing the constant amplitude and phase of a sinusoidal signal at the fundamental frequency. If conventional phasor analysis is used for estimating dynamic characteristic of generator, it will lead to errors. In this paper, the modified dynamic phasor estimation method is proposed to overcome limitation of conventional phasor principle. The modified dynamic phasor can estimate decaying amplitude of the current and the proposed method is improved as compared to the traditional one. By replacing the constant amplitude of fundamental component by a second order Taylor polynomial , the amplitude of exponentially decaying currents are approximated by LSQ technique. Decaying DC offset removal is carried out before applying modified dynamic phasor additionally. The method is based on the fact that a purely sinusoidal signal has a zero average over a full cycle of its fundamental frequency, whereas an exponential signal has a nonzero average over that same interval. The performance of the proposed algorithm was verified under various fault conditions using the PSCAD/EMTDC. The proposed algorithm is largely insensitive to the variation in fault distance and fault resistance. The test results show a very high accurate performance. The proposed algorithm can keep up with the variation of the local source impedance.
