Now is the age of contents. Every country of the world tries to develop its own contents. Story-telling is very important for the contents to be successful. Though China has plenty of literary subject matter along with its long history and literary tradition, animations of China have never been very successful so far. In Japan, however, we can find a lot of successful animations adapted from Chinese classics. Then what are the factors that make the Animes adapted from Chinese classics so successful? For that survey, I have classified Anime in three major groups according to the adaptation methods. The theoretical background of the classification is "Three methods of the film as a transformation of novel“ by a movie theorist, Geoffrey Wagner: ① Adaption faithful to the original, ② Creative adaption based on the original, ③ Adaption rearranged from the original elements.Japan began to produce Anime since around 1926 such as , , on the basis of Chinese classics.Till 1980's, excepting some cases including , the adaptation was faithful to the original classics, but the paradigm has changed since around 1995. Commercial works like, etc began to appear, using only the elements of the original. However, creative adaptation based on the original, or creative adaptation rearranging the original elements, is very uncommon or unsuccessful in China. The Chinese are so respectful of the original classics that they are reluctant in adaptation, and so unskillful in it. It is partly because of the political system, Statism, and partly because they have passive attitude in adaptation out of their pride for their classics. When it comes to animations of Japan or the United States on the contrary, they are much more free in terms of adaptation. The adaptation in Japan and the United States may be much more free because the originals are not indigenous to them. Such freedom may have offered the way that they can make more creative adaptations, which will lead to more commercial success.China has plenty of literary subject matters along with its long history and culture. But for them to be more successful in making commercially successful animations, they must minimize their obsession concerning the original trying different adaptation methods. It may be really regretful not to use such good literary subject matters. According to the findings of this study, the Chinese should understand and blend the three adaptation methods if they want to make more quality animations based on their Classics. Neither reproducing the original faithfully nor neglecting the elements of the original would be ideal for this purpose. At present, both the animations faithful to the original and creative animations based on the original have already been made in China. However, the third model- rearrangement of the original elements- is not practiced in China yet. Among these three methods, the first one is commonly practiced about classics with definite historical background like, etc. But one thing to remember is that you should not produce a history drama paying too much attention to historical facts. The writer's point of view or a little imagination or fictional elements should be added to give more reality to the animations. The second and third methods are appropriate for classics with relatively less historical background and so a lot of fantastic elements can be added. Therefore, in these methods, creativity such as scenario, character, worldly viewpoint, etc are more emphasized. Therefore, in these methods, the planning course - pre-production course- is extremely important. Particularly the third method, though the most common adaptation method throughout the world, has not been tried in China yet. The reason is that the Chinese are very passive in adapting the original because they have a strong pride in those originals. The respect of the original is good, but for free creation, they need to have more flexible attitude toward the originals. Based on such free adaptation, more improved animations can be created. What is most important here is the free mind of the author. Also the viewers's attitude to understand and accept those creative animations when they are produced is important. On the basis of such interaction, the animation industry of China will make more progress. From this point of view, I maintain that there must be active and continuous talks among those engaged in animations and scholars of China.
