Before the rise of modern art, ceramics and glass belonged to the category of Arts and Crafts, specialized in making utensils and ornaments of practical value. After the rise of modern art, ceramics and glass gradually separated from the Arts and Crafts and developed into the field of Fine Arts. Ceramics and glass were no longer made for use, but instead were made into fine art works to express thoughts of artists their own. In the creation of modern artworks, the combination of materials is a way to enrich artistic expression. In order to enrich the diversity of art forms, many artists do artworks by combining with variety of materials. Ceramics and glass are two kinds of materials with many similarities. They have similar raw materials and production techniques, and both of them need to be made at high temperature in kilns. Glass in essence and ceramic glaze is the same kind, they both are sand minerals in high temperature sintering formed. Looking at the historical data of glass, it can be found that people discovered glass accidently when they were firing ceramics, it is the historical evidence that ceramic and glass influenced each other in the process. Thus, whether the innovation of material technology, or the visual experience, the combination of ceramic and glass will exceed the artistic expression of a single material works. Therefore, this paper will briefly analyze historical origin, development process and production methods of ceramic art and glass art, and summarize the connection between those two materials. Through analysis of ceramic artworks, glass artworks, and artworks that combine with ceramic and glass, to explain the specific production methods and the characteristics of the artwork comparison, to study how it effects on art creation by analyzing combination of ceramic and glass artworks.
