As a result of improved living standards, the desire of Chinese people to be fashionable is higher than ever in the twenty-first century. Accordingly, the Chinese are now demanding wedding dresses with unique and various designs. Therefore, there is a need to design well-balanced dresses that are not only traditional but also international in order to be competitive in the market and meet customers' needs. Even though the Chinese want creative and differentiated wedding dresses, there are hardly any studies on wedding dresses based on the traditional Chinese attire, qipao. The qipao was thoroughly surveyed through literature review, and the formative characteristics of the qipao in the Qing dynasty and in modern China were compared and analyzed in the study. The formative characteristics of the qipao are divided into five categories in this study: silhouette, shape of neckband, shape of collar, kinds of fabrics, and techniques of trimming. Based on the results of the analysis, three wedding dresses which include the formative characteristics of the qipao were made. The purpose of this study was to develop creative wedding dresses which represent Chinese culture and custom and to suggest competitive designs which are suitable for the global market as well as the Chinese market.
