Voltage source converters (VSCs) generally adopt the low-voltage ride through (LVRT) control strategies when short-circuit faults occur in the power system. As a kind of typical LVRT control method, the grid code requires VSCs to increase reactive power and to reduce active power to a low level. Although the grid code can keep the devices connected with the system, it cannot deal with the shortage and imbalance of the active power of the grid. In this paper, an improved LVRT control strategy based on the traditional LVRT control strategy is proposed, which can maintain the active power of the converter to a relatively high extent, thus ensuring the active power balance of the power system. The simulation results of MATLAB/Simulink demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
