Pedicle screw has been widely used for spinal surgery to treat spinal instability and disorder. One of the mechanical traits of a pedicle screw that is very important clinically is its pull-out strength. It is directly related to the implant's holding power and the possibility of screw failure. The main purpose of this work is to assess the pull-out performance of Ti-6Al-4V ELI pedicle screw of a specific design with special features in different grades of rigid polyurethane. The pull-out test was performed according to ASTM F 543-17, by using Grade 5 and Grade 20 polyurethanes with different densities to represent normal and osteoporotic bone conditions, as mentioned in ASTM F 1839-08. Average pull-out strength of 53.1 N and 1065.4 N were recorded for Grade 5 and Grade 20, respectively. This result shows that samples tested in Grade 20 polyurethane yield much greater pull-out strength than samples tested in Grade 5, mirroring the standard values. It proves that such a test is highly representative of this particular pedicle screw design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
