As the atmospheric environment regulations around the world have been progressively strengthened, it is recommended to use appropriate VOC complaint products. As a result, not only advanced countries such as Europe but also S. Korea are strengthening regulations on Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) and thus, according to Clean Air Conservation Act in Korea, eco-friendly waterborne basecoat paint that meet VOC limit(450g/L for WB basecoat) should be used since January 2015.As the regulations on VOCs are gradually strengthened, the use of waterborne paints developed by using water instead of organic solvents is gradually expanding in the automobile industry in order to minimize the emission of volatile organic compounds in paints and both domestic and foreign automakers are already increasing their use of waterborne paints in production lines.Paint makers are also encouraging the use of eco-friendly waterborne products in consideration of the safety and health of workers as well as environmental protection. Recently, the needs for waterborne paints has been increased even in bodyshops where auto repair works are carried out. As the number of vehicles with waterborne paints has been increased and the regulations has been strengthened, the use of waterborne paints is expected to increase rapidly in the coming future. However, due to the characteristics of waterborne paints using water as a solvent, it’s more sensitive to color changes depending on the usage conditions and storage period than solvent borne paints. Therefore, in this paper, I’ve checked and confirmed the color changes of the waterborne basecoat paint under various humidity conditions. The experimental method was to keep the temperature in the spray booth constant and to measure the color change of the waterborne basecoat according to the monthly relative humidity by VCI(Visual Correlation Index) value. As a result, the VCI values of the panels painted under the relative humidity of 20% ~ 60% in the spray booth had the least changes, and the panels painted at less than 10% or more than 80% showed the biggest color deviation. In other words, it was confirmed that the waterborne basecoat showed changes in color and contrast depending on the difference in humidity under the same conditions.Again, it can be seen that the color of solvent borne basecoat is not affected greatly by the humidity when it dried after coating since the evaporation rate of the organic solvent in the paint is not affected by humidity, whereas the waterborne basecoat is affected by the color depending on the humidity condition. In the refinish process, painting the basecoat is a very important task in terms of restoring the original color of the vehicle. As mentioned above, waterborne paints are becoming more essentials in the refinish industry. In order to use them more positively and correctly, the worker must understand the characteristics of the waterborne paints and the optimal working conditions to use it by themselves. That is, the right selection of reducer and the proper spraying method depending on working conditions must be considered to obtain the best quality from waterborne basecoat paints.
