Trials are currently taking place all over Japan, in areas from banking to online shopping, to examine whether iris-imaging is as reliable and fraudproof as its supporters claim. One advantage of this new technology is that it could remove the need for people to have to remember personal identification numbers when accessing cash dispensers. However, iris-imaging is likely to find its greatest application in electronic commerce. It is anticipated by engineers that legal tender in the age of electronic commerce will take the form of a digital certificate combined with a coded image of a person's iris.
