The paper investigates the alternative dielectric gas to that of SF 6 . Due to the comparable properties of R-12 with SF 6 the authors are motivated to perform experiments to find out its utility in power apparatus. Series of experiments were performed to investigate its breakdown strength under different types of voltage supplies and pressures. Sphere-Sphere electrode configuration was used for investigation. Breakdown strength of pure R-12 gas along with R-12 gas and air mixtures were being investigated under different pressures by apply AC, DC and impulse voltages. The results show that dielectric strength of the mixture improves when percentage of air is increased and good results are obtained in proportion 70% R-12 and 30% air in all forms of voltage application. In addition, the breakdown strength of R-12 and air mixture has been tested at different air pressure under AC, DC and impulse voltage. Result convened that gas mixture offer better resistance to breakdown compared with pure gas. Results so obtained were compared with SF 6 and associated mixtures to prove the replacement of SF 6 with R-12 gas.
